Suspended Gold Nanowires: Ballistic Transport of Electrons
نویسندگان
چکیده
Gold nanowires a few atomic diameters wide are observed by ultra-high vacuum transmission electron microscopy, and their conductance measured simultaneously using a scanning tunneling microscope built into the electron microscope. A strand of gold atoms suspended between electrodes is directly observed to have a conductance of 2e2/h (=(12.9 kΩ)-1), where e is the electron charge and h is Planck’s constant. This conductance quantization results from ballistic transport of electrons through a conduction channel of the strand.

Ballistic InAs nanowire transistors.
Ballistic transport of electrons at room temperature in top-gated InAs nanowire (NW) transistors is experimentally observed and theoretically examined. From length dependent studies, the low-field mean free path is directly extracted as ~150 nm. The mean free path is found to be independent of temperature due to the dominant role of surface roughness scattering. The mean free path was also theo...
متن کاملNon-Ohmic Coulomb drag in the ballistic electron transport regime
We work out a theory of the Coulomb drag current created under the ballistic transport regime in a one-dimensional nanowire by a ballistic non-Ohmic current in a nearby parallel nanowire. As in the Ohmic case, we predict sharp oscillation of the drag current as a function of gate voltage or the chemical potential of electrons. We also study dependence of the drag current on the voltage V across...
متن کاملAb initio vibrations in nonequilibrium nanowires
We review recent results on electronic and thermal transport in two different quasi one-dimensional systems: Silicon nanowires (SiNW) and atomic gold chains. For SiNW’s we compute the ballistic electronic and thermal transport properties on equal footing, allowing us to make quantitative predictions for the thermoelectric properties, while for the atomic gold chains we evaluate microscopically ...
متن کاملStability of metal nanowires at ultrahigh current densities
We develop a generalized grand canonical potential for the ballistic nonequilibrium electron distribution in a metal nanowire with a finite applied bias voltage. Coulomb interactions are treated in the self-consistent Hartree approximation, in order to ensure gauge invariance. Using this formalism, we investigate the stability and cohesive properties of metallic nanocylinders at ultrahigh curre...
متن کاملElectronic transmission of a nanowire partly irradiated under terahertz electromagnetic field
We theoretically study the electronic transport of a nanowire partly irradiated under an external terahertz (THz) electromagnetic field. Although the electrons in the ballistic nanowires only suffer lateral collision with photons the reflection of electrons also takes place in this partly irradiated case. Using free-electron model and scattering matrix approach we showed that at resonance there...
